Elm Class had a fabulous time learning about the Stone Age at Kents Cavern in Torquay. The children experienced what it would have been like for early man to dwell in these caves. We discovered that moss and horse fat were lit to create light around these caves. The children also experienced total darkness for 3 whole seconds, imagining what it was like in the palaeolithic times. We know that Neanderthal man and Homo Sapiens lived in these caves because their skulls were discovered by archaeologists. We looked at these skulls and compared them, observing that Neanderthal had more pronounced eye brows and wider noses than Homo Sapiens! We also learnt about a pioneer of modern archaeology called William Pengelley who was able to date how old certain artefacts were.
Well done Elm Class for a successful day. It was lovely to hear many of you thank our tour guide and bus driver throughout the day. We would like to thank our parent volunteers for making the day such a success as well as the PTFA for funding this invaluable experience.
